LIVING IN LUXURY
Every single person on this planet has a different idea of what luxury is, but there’s normally one similarity between each and every idea: luxury or luxurious things all cost money. Luxury is for the rich. It’s not for everyday people. It’s something we’re either lucky enough to inherit, or are lucky enough to have worked toward. This is why people are so fascinated by rags to riches stories. It’s the same reason why people funnel themselves toward careers that earn more money than others.
It’s also the same reason why people who are rich tend to believe that people who are poor don’t deserve to have everyday luxuries. They haven’t earned them. To many people luxury only comes if you’ve put in enough work.
I’d like to challenge this idea.
Because every single person on this planet has a different idea of what luxury is, and its only similarity is that it costs money, I’d like to challenge the idea that is has to cost money. Some people believe bubble bath, sugar scrubs, and bath bombs are luxury items. Other people will say it’s their weekly habit. Some people will complain how all American houses have washing machines and driers, and that it seems like a silly luxury item. Other people, especially Americans, say that it’s one of the most important parts of choosing an apartment or a house. Some people, also, will turn their noses up at ‘gourmet’ food because this food is also known as a luxury. Other people will consume this food because, to them, that’s what healthful food is.
If every single person has a different idea of luxury, then luxury items don’t need to be pricey. You can create your own ways of treating yourself because that price tag only counts if you allow it to.
A simple, five-dollar mug at your favorite big box store can be counted as a luxury item. So can scooping an eighth of a cup of raw sugar into a bath, and swirling it around in the hot water.
Luxury can be anything. It’s an idea of treating yourself well, and having special objects or special treats you give yourself to elevate your mood and elevate how you live. Anything can do that. As long as you keep your eyes open to what can be luxurious, you can treat yourself however you please. These items don’t have to be expensive, they just have to exist.
The biggest luxury we could ever have is a home that we feel loved in. I’m not saying the luxury is a human, nor a pet. What I’m saying is that a home is a place we feel the most comfortable in, decorated in a way that suits who we are. There are endless ways to create a place for ourselves that does just that. A physical place can feel like it loves you, too. It’s why we move cities. It’s why, if we find what we love, we switch houses. A home that feels like a home can feel like it loves you, too. Surrounding yourself with what creates who you are doesn’t have to be a luxury item, and it shouldn’t be.
Living In Luxury will explore different ways we can treat ourselves to what feels good, why it feels good, and the idea that we deserve to treat ourselves. This segment is about surrounding yourself with a home we feel loved in, and will explore our personal styles and how filling your home with what you love doesn’t have to be luxury. You deserve to have a home that you love. Luxury isn’t just for the rich.
