Your Home Is Not A Trend

It’s easy to get stuck on trends. However, when creating a place to live, is it realistic to upgrade your home whenever trends change? A home needs to become a dynamic environment based on who you are and what you love. Chances are, trends don’t mesh with the lifestyle you have or want to have. We also tend to have a little voice in our heads that tell us that because we’re broke, we don’t have the money or deserve the wont to build the home of our dreams.

But, creating that home of our dreams doesn’t necessarily mean we’re following trends, does it?

Different styles, often depicted by trends, are excellent to sort through when trying to find ourselves. Studying, researching, and learning about them can inform us on who we are, what we like, and how we want to decorate. If we also keep note on what we like about or don’t like about the style or trend, we can add what we want into whatever room we’re trying to build on. Finding who we are by being inspired by different styles or trends can allow us to find how we want to build our home.

Once you have those ideas, the act of creation or a coat of paint is an inexpensive way to begin your venture.

We spend money on clothing. In our closets, we tend not to spend money on what we do not want to wear. If it isn’t comfortable, if we don’t look good in it, and if it doesn’t match our personalities, we don’t purchase it. The item or items get left on the rack.

If we think of how we want to decorate our homes, we should decorate the way we build our closets: only purchasing what makes us comfortable, what we like to look at, and whether or not what we have matches our personalities.

Decorating our homes is exactly like building our closet, only instead of wearing it, we live in it.

This means that, if you see a white, plastic waste bin and you say to yourself, “I need a waste bin,” and purchase it based on necessity rather than based on like, taste, and necessity, you’ll have an ugly trash can that makes you feel like crap whenever you see it. However, if you find a pretty trash can that happens to be twenty-percent off, you might smile whenever you see it underneath your bathroom sink.

This might seem like a little thing, but can you imagine if you applied this to your entire home? Surrounding yourself with objects that make you smile as soon as you see them? Surrounding yourself with objects that make you feel at home in your home after a long day at work?

That’s why there are yard sales, garage sales, and, if you live in America like I do, sometimes you might find stuff by the side of the road marked, ‘Free’. As long as you plan your budget accordingly, you can save up for special things, or, search high and low for beautiful, inexpensive items that make you feel happy.

If you treat your home the way you treat your clothing closet, you’ll feel at home in your house rather than just at home in your outfits. Just like the way you look at your clothing, finding yourself without trends matters just as much in the home. Many of us would love to be able to take part in looking at design or clothing trends, but for most of us it isn’t possible. Also, do they really help find who you are?

Following your own eye, your own heart, and your own mind will help you to create your home. Even if you’re only living there for a few months, looking around, living in what you love, will help you feel the love you’re feeding yourself and you deserve to feel.
