Make Your Bed

Many people believe in making their beds, while other people don’t see the point. Until I started making mine every morning, I didn’t see the point, either. When those who do make them, talk about why they do, it’s normally about how easy it is to do, and it boosts the mood by getting something manual done so quickly, and so well. Other people do it because it makes the bedroom look neater, nicer, and cleaner — especially if they have bedding they love, and pillows that keep a room cute and decorated.

These are two valid reasons. Both of them hit the pleasure center of the brain, but that’s not why I do it, and I do it every single morning. This might not work for you, and that’s okay. Everybody is different. Some people don’t have that fifteen minutes in the morning to tuck a flat sheet into a mattress, a quilt or comforter into a mattress, and pillows to toss on top. Because everybody is different, and you might not have the luxury of those ten to fifteen minutes every morning, you might not be able to partake in this.

But, as someone who’s life and job are both at home, I must say, making a bed is one of the most comforting parts of life. You make your bead, and, at night, you get under the covers… and it’s the most comfortable thing in the world. It’s like you’re a baby, being swaddled by blankets again. You’re being held by your bed in the most comforting hug in the entire world.

Yes, making your bed can feel like a giant, bear hug.

All you need to do is tuck your flat sheet under the edges of your mattress in the morning, and throw your blankets and pillows on top. After a long day at work, or a hard day of life, climbing into a bear hug will not only help you sleep, it’ll remind you that you deserve to be loved and feel loved.

If you remind yourself to love yourself, whether it’s with a giant hug from your bed or not, then you’ll believe you deserve to be loved. Making your bed is only one way to do this.

Finding bedding you love, pillows you love, and a warm blanket you love will also make it much more fun to climb in at night. If you love it when you look at it, it’ll boost the happy hormones going off in your brain, making the hug that much better. If you buy nice sheets, your favorite color or a fun pattern, it can make you smile when you wake up to go to the bathroom, and you’ll see them right before you climb into your hug.

If you have a bed that makes you smile, it’ll make you smile even more when you get into it. You’ll be swaddled by what you love, making the bed hug that much warmer, and that much more comfortable.

I know I can’t force you to make it in the morning, but I do hope you’ll try this, and that it’ll become your new morning so you can have a new evening. If you have a significant other, I hope they love climbing into a hug with you. If you’re like me, I hope your bed makes you feel unalone. Yes, that is silly, but it helps.

I know I can’t force you to make your bed, but I hope you find yourself wondering why I wrote an entire article about this enough to try it.
