Have you ever heard of a ‘gratification list’? In this day and age, you probably have. And, many of you, just like me, have probably tried making that list on days when you feel depressed. Others of you have probably tried making one ever single night before you go to sleep. Whether this method has worked for you or not, there is one way to make this list much more powerful than it’s been before.
Still, making a list, but instead of a mere thread of bullet points, allowing for a remembrance of that item, writing a blurb about that item. Naming that bullet point won’t bring back the memory of it. However, describing what was special about it, and reminding yourself why it felt special to begin with will help cement that happy part of your day as a happy part of your day. Listing it doesn’t bring back those emotions, but writing a blurb about it does.

You don’t need to have a cap on the number of bulleted blurbs. All you need is one thing that you can write about, and if you have more that you can think of, then word vomit all over that page all about that bullet. If you write at least three sentences about what made that part of your day special, then you might relive how that event made you feel. If you can relive how that good thing felt, that’s when your gratification list will work the best.
Following that up with an adorable pen and a fun notebook will entice you and bring you to that spot in your head where you’ll be able to recreate what made you happy, why it made you happy, and how it made you happy.
Once you create those blurbs, those memories will be that much stronger. Stronger memories equals stronger happiness. Being able to write them down with an adorable pen in a cute notebook will allow your to feel that much closer to the moments, and, whenever you question how you’re feeling, you can go back over this notebook.
Don’t forget to add the date you’re creating each list on each page, and any time you feel down on yourself, revisit that notebook and relive those memories turned into blurbs. They’ll remind you that your life does not suck as much as you think it does. We all believe our lives suck at one time or another, or, like me, you’ll believe your life is a never ending tunnel of suckage. But, creating these lists will give you the ability to take a step back and understand that not everything is crap all the time, and when everything is awful, it’ll give you the strength to fight for everything to get better.
