Grilled Trash

There’s a very specific reason why I chose to call this the ‘Grilled Trash Sandwich’, and it’s because I took every note in the book about making the bread crispy, and slammed them all together with some salt and black pepper. While creating this, I decided that an egg, butter, and mayo would make the best bread possible — not to mention seasoning it, which, is hardly ever done. At least, not to my knowledge, and not to toot my own horn, but reading cookbooks is fun! Another reason for calling it ‘Grilled Trash’? White American cheese. You can’t get any trashier than that. This is essentially a kid’s sandwich, but adult. I hope you enjoy eating it as much as I enjoyed making it!

Ingredients:

1 egg

1 tablespoon room temperature salted butter

2 tablespoons mayonnaise

Pinch sea salt

Freshly cracked pepper

2 slices whole wheat bread

3 slices white American cheese

1 pat butter, for frying

Directions:

Put a small skillet on low on the stove and add one pat butter, allowing to melt while you get the sandwich ready to fry. Don’t forget to move the butter around as it melts by lifting the skillet and tilting every which way to coat the bottom of the pan.

Stir the egg, butter, mayo, salt, and pepper together with a fork in a bowl. Dredge each slice in the mixture. Place both slices bread on the skillet, and press down with large, flat spatula. Turn the heat up to medium-high. Add cheese to one slice of bread. Flip the empty slice onto the cheesy slice once the bread has become nice, crispy, and browned. Once both sides are browned and the cheese is gooey, remove from heat.

Consume immediately.

Serving Suggestions:

Chocolate milk, vanilla milkshake, pilsner.
